CATAGEN APPROACH

The CATAGEN Ageing approach has been used by global OEMs for development & homologation requirements. Guided by our strategy of development through technology and innovation, we seek to provide top-quality products and services for clients around the globe.

CATAGEN conduct all catalyst Ageing and Characterisation at full scale on engine aftertreatment systems using internationally patented technology; a Synthetic Gas Recirculating Reactor. The CATAGEN OMEGA & OMICRON Test Vehicles and the CATAGEN facility are approved by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) and Applus IDIADA for Accelerated Catalyst Ageing. We have also supported OEMs with type approval for the US (EPA & CARB), Indian and Chinese regulators.

The CATAGEN Toolset can track the ageing experience in real time using the proprietary CATAGEN Ageing Metric. This metric can be used to quantify the total ageing experience for comparisions, test design and degradation history for physical and virtual development of aged parts. We can match your desired catalyst bed temperatures, emissions and mass flows exactly. Where possible, eliminating fuel expenditure and CO2 emissions.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

The key focus for heavy duty manufacturers with increasingly stringent emissions standards include:

  • Diesel PN (Particle Number) limits
  • Engine calibration for a wide range of engine operation conditions (speed, torque, temperatures, altitudes, …) to meet “Real Driving Emissions” limits.
  • CO2 reporting not only by g/k/Wh for the engine, but a whole vehicle approach. Most likely combining engine test data with a vehicle software simulation approach
  • No defined drive cycle
  • To develop ageing protocol to fast track catalyst ageing
  • Testing definition for HD vehicle Hybrid-powertrains.
  • A potential NO2 limit
  • Reduced Fuel consumption or alternative e-fuels such as hydrogen fuel cells
  • Warranty return issues

LATEST EMISSIONS LEGISLATION

The Euro VI-D legislation for heavy-duty engines approvals entered into force on 1 September 2018 for new types and has applied to all new engines from 1 September 2019. The Euro VI-E entered into force on 1 September 2020 for new types and will apply to all new engines from 1 September 2021. This stage includes consideration of cold-start emissions in data evaluation of the PEMS testing, as well as the measurement and evaluation of PN during the on-road test.

Particle Number (PN) measurement will be included in Euro VI Step E from the beginning for compression ignition engines. For positive ignition engines (natural gas mainly in heavy duty) the PN will need to be declared for monitoring purposes for new type approved vehicles from 01/01/2021 and will need to be complied with from 01/01/2023.
